Abstract:
Some bat species host pathogenic viruses and represent recognized models for studying antiviral immunity. Here, we present a protocol for collecting and generating primary cells from wild bat tissues. We describe steps for tissue collection, enzymatic digestion, isolation, and cell expansion. We then detail procedures for immunocompetency testing of the established cultures. This protocol describes the generation of in vitro models for understudied non-model species, facilitating physiologically relevant assays to improve understanding of bat biology, immunology, and pathogen-host interactions.
