Background:
Low-dose atropine has emerged as an effective intervention for myopia control in children; however, for a long time the evidence predominantly originated from East Asia.
Objective:
This article reviews the efficacy, safety, dose-finding and regulatory approval status of topical atropine for myopia control, with particular focus on European populations.
Material And Methods:
Narrative review of selected RCT (randomized controlled trials), meta-analyses, long-term data and regulatory approval information.
Results:
Atropine 0.01-0.05% dose-dependently reduces myopia progression. The effects of a 0.01% monotherapy are small to moderate. With Ryjunea® (Santen Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., Osaka, Japan), a preparation was approved in Europe for the first time in 2025.
Conclusion:
Topical atropine is effective and well tolerated. Unresolved questions regarding dosing in non-Asian populations, treatment duration and long-term effects on complications should be addressed by further studies.
