Henry Bugbee and His Eponymous Electrode

Objective:
To explore the development of the Bugbee electrode, and the career of the urologist whose name it bears, which persists as a ubiquitous instrument in endoscopic urology today.
Sources And Methods:
A structured literature review was performed using online repositories, peer-reviewed publications, historical texts and archival materials. Additional resources were obtained from the William P. Didusch Center for Urologic History.
Results:
Henry Greenwood Bugbee (1882-1945) was a prominent early 20th-century urologist who served in numerous leadership roles, including the American Urological Association presidency from 1921-1922. Bugbee's lasting legacy, however, stems from innovations in endoscopic electrocautery. Although therapeutic electrical current had been explored for centuries, Edwin Beer sparked rapid evolution in modern endoscopy when he introduced a monopolar Oudin cauterizer through a cystoscope in 1910. Bugbee entered the fray in 1913, publishing extensively alongside Hugh Young and others on the use of "high frequency spark" for prostatic obstruction. His seminal 1917 paper, "The Use of the High Frequency Spark in the Treatment of Median Bar Obstruction", remains the foundational reference describing the origins of his now-ubiquitous electrode. While the eponym was not birthed immediately, papers throughout the 1920s increasingly referred to "Bugbee's treatment," and by 1927, modifications of the Braasch cystoscope incorporated a "Bugbee electrode" by name. By the 1930s, the term was firmly established in urologic literature and has remained in continuous use for nearly a century.
Conclusions:
Alongside remarkable advances in urologic technology, Bugbee's simple yet effective electrode has remained commonplace and immortalized his name in urologic practice.
