An Alternative Test to Evaluate the Assistance Provided by Back-Support Exoskeletons: A Pilot Study

Abstract:
OCCUPATIONAL APPLICATIONSThe test proposed in this study, assimilable to a maximal isometric mid-thigh pull, appears to detect the acute assistance provided by the exoskeleton, expressed as the difference in performance with and without donning the device; the test can be performed with minimal equipment and setup, ensuring that the test can be replicated widely by practitioners and employed in an occupational setting. These preliminary results point to the test being feasible; additionally, the exoskeleton was perceived as giving support and being moderately comfortable. Future research could further validate the test by comparing different models of back-support exoskeletons, passive or active, different populations, and repeating the test over multiple sessions.
