Abstract:
Molecular ferroelectric materials have garnered profound interest in the last two decades owing to their structural flexibility, tunability, and homochirality, enabling a variety of technological applications. Achieving polar point groups through rational molecular design is crucial for discovering new molecular ferroelectrics. Herein, we report a mononuclear Cu(II) complex, [Cu((S,S)-L)(NO3)(CH3OH)]·NO3 (1), where (S,S)-L = 2,6-bis((S)-4-isopropyl-5,5-diphenyl-4,5-dihydrooxazol-2-yl)pyridine, synthesised using a chiral (S,S)-L ligand bearing two chiral carbon centers. 1 crystallises in the polar monoclinic P21 space group and shows ferroelectric behaviour, characterized by a P-E hysteresis loop with a remanent polarization of 0.92 μC cm-2. Piezoelectric energy harvesting using its thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) composites gives a maximum output voltage of 13.4 V, which was further used to charge a 10 μF capacitor within 90 seconds.

Crystal Field Theory - Octahedral Complexes
To explain the observed behavior of transition metal complexes (such as colors), a model involving electrostatic interactions between the electrons from the ligands and the electrons in the unhybridized d orbitals of the central metal atom has been developed. This electrostatic model is crystal field theory (CFT). It helps to understand, interpret, and predict the colors, magnetic behavior, and some structures of coordination compounds of transition metals.

Crystal Field Theory - Tetrahedral and Square Planar Complexes
Crystal field theory (CFT) is applicable to molecules in geometries other than octahedral. In octahedral complexes, the lobes of the dx2−y2 and dz2 orbitals point directly at the ligands. For tetrahedral complexes, the d orbitals remain in place, but with only four ligands located between the axes. None of the orbitals points directly at the tetrahedral ligands. However, the dx2−y2 and dz2 orbitals (along the Cartesian axes) overlap with the ligands less than the dxy,...
Thermal Electrocyclic Reactions: Stereochemistry
Selection Rules: Thermal Activation
Conjugated systems containing an even number of π-electron pairs undergo a conrotatory ring closure. For example, thermal electrocyclization of (2E,4E)-2,4-hexadiene, a conjugated diene containing two π-electron pairs, gives trans-3,4-dimethylcyclobutene.
