Global Scientometric Analysis of Research on Bisphenol and Other Endocrine-Disrupting Chemicals in Cardiovascular

Background:
To map the global scientific production on bisphenol and cardiovascular disease between 2019 and 2024, based on the publication volume, network of collaboration, citation trends, and theme evolution in order to provide an overview of research dynamics, principal contributors, and emerging areas in this field.
Methods:
This was a descriptive scientometric study. The criteria for selection were that the article must have been published between January 2019 and December 2024, and that the terms "bisphenol" be in the title or abstract. Scopus literature was then searched on December 24, 2024, via a large search algorithm. 640 documents were flagged and studied using SciVal and Bibliometrix in R Studio 4.5.1, to calculate for a variety of bibliometric indicators, and to perform some advanced bibliometric analysis.
Results:
Between 2019 and 2024, scientific production worldwide on bisphenol and cardiovascular disease comprised 640 documents published in 402 sources, with an annual growth rate of 6.1%. A total of 3519 authors collaborated, with an average of 6.7 coauthors per document and 18.1% of documents with international coauthorship. Most of overall documents were articles (525), followed by reviews (75), book chapters (16), and conference papers (12). Authors were led by Elisa Cairrao (University of Beira Interior, Portugal) and institutions such as Nanjing Medical University, China. The journal with the highest scholarly output was "Environmental Pollution," with 15 published. Per Bradford's Law, the bulk of publications are in a few journals. Lotka's Law shows that most authors wrote only a single document, and thematic evolution shows trends such, for instance, the stability of "antioxidant activity" and the evolution of "bisphenol A" into themes like "atherosclerosis," and "cardiovascular disease."
Conclusions:
The results showed that the studies were concentrated in some journals, and that specific authors and institutions have contributing significantly to this research topic. Understanding these patterns could help inform new research efforts and policy decisions towards a better management of the effects of bisphenol on health related to cardiovascular diseases.
