Parental Perspectives on Feeding Challenges in Children With Cerebral Palsy: A Qualitative Study

This study aimed to explore the lived experiences of mothers of children with cerebral palsy (CP) regarding feeding challenges and the coping strategies they employ within the Turkish socio-cultural and healthcare context.

Thematic analysis was conducted on semi-structured interviews with 26 mothers of children with CP receiving treatment at a university-affiliated rehabilitation centre in Turkey. Data collection occurred between July and August 2024 and was guided by the Standards for Reporting Qualitative Research. MAXQDA 2024 software facilitated data organization and coding.

Three main themes emerged: (1) From Diagnosis to the First Bites: How the CP Diagnostic Journey Shaped Early Feeding Experiences, (2) Feeding Challenges and Strategies and (3) Access to Professional and Support Services. Mothers reported difficulties such as swallowing problems, poor appetite and financial barriers. Adaptive strategies included modifying food textures, restructuring meals and limiting junk food. Many emphasized the need for nutrition education and improved access to professional services.

The findings highlight the multifaceted nature of feeding challenges faced by mothers of children with CP, encompassing difficulties related to oral-motor dysfunction, food refusal, financial constraints and limited access to professional support services. These experiences underscore the need for early, multidisciplinary and family-centred interventions, as well as improved access to nutrition education and professional guidance for caregiving families.
