Strengthening Rural Prevention Through Collaborative Partnerships, Funding Diversification, and Youth Engagement

Community-based prevention initiatives increasingly rely on cross-sector partnerships and innovative financing models to sustain impact over time. This article describes how Wilkes Youth Life Development and its Teen Action Council, a Drug-Free Communities-funded coalition, have implemented comprehensive youth substance use prevention strategies through collaborative partnerships, diversified funding, and meaningful youth engagement. Prevention efforts include the delivery of evidence-based programs such as Positive Action and teen Mental Health First Aid, environmental management strategies including medication lockbox distribution, and youth leadership development initiatives that empower young people to drive positive community change. Key partnering sectors include law enforcement, local businesses, public health agencies, youth leaders, and statewide and regional funding and capacity-building organizations such as Community Impact NC, Vaya Health, and the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina Foundation. Intentional partnership development, diversified funding streams, and ongoing training and technical assistance have strengthened coalition capacity, expanded community reach, and enhanced the long-term sustainability of prevention efforts.
