Aerogel micro-optics and their homothetic miniaturization
Abstract:
We report the design, fabrication and characterization of functional refractive microlens arrays and micro-Fresnel zone plate arrays made of three distinct material states, namely ultra-porous monolithic silica aerogel, silica xerogel, and dense fused silica, all derived from a common template. Aerogel and xerogel elements serve as master objects which are thermally vitrified via viscous flow to produce dense fused silica microlenses. In this process, the skeletal silica network collapses, densifies, and contracts while preserving morphological similarity, effectively constituting a homothetic transformation of the template geometry. This "systolic" miniaturization approach provides an alternative route to refractive and diffractive micro-optical elements with deterministically tailored structural and optical properties.
