Workplace Accommodations for Alopecia Areata: A Framework for Dermatologists

Alopecia areata (AA) may impair occupational functioning through psychosocial distress, disease visibility, concerns regarding hair-prosthesis displacement, and unwanted disclosure. Importantly, occupational impairment may not parallel the extent of visible hair loss. Workplace accommodations can reduce barriers to employment, but dermatologists may face uncertainty regarding when accommodation is appropriate, what information to provide employers, and how to balance immediate support with long-term adaptation. We propose a practical five-step framework for evaluating workplace accommodation requests in AA.
