Beyond One-Size-Fits-All: A Scoping Review of Culturally Responsive IPV Interventions for Asian Communities in the...

Asian populations are often underrepresented in research and services related to intimate partner violence (IPV). Prior studies highlight the importance of culturally responsive IPV interventions, as such services can facilitate help-seeking and support attainment. Using a comprehensive search strategy, this scoping review examines the landscape of IPV interventions specifically developed for or culturally adapted to Asian communities in the United States. Cultural responsiveness was assessed using the Ecological Validity Model, which we used to evaluate interventions across eight dimensions: language, persons, metaphors, content, concepts, goals, methods, and context. The search yielded 5,609 unique records, of which 27 articles met the inclusion criteria. Across these studies, 19 distinct interventions were identified, representing 7 primary approaches: anti-carceral models, bystander interventions, media and communication campaigns, family-based interventions, teen dating violence prevention, therapeutic practices, and advocacy models. Analysis indicated moderate-to-high levels of cultural responsiveness; 63.2% of interventions addressed 7 or all 8 cultural responsiveness dimensions. Three of the 19 interventions involved adaptations of existing evidence-based programs, while the remaining were primarily informed by practice frameworks, broader theoretical approaches, and community needs assessments. However, gaps in scientific rigor remain. Among the 27 studies, 55.6% were descriptive or exploratory, while the remainder were formative or process evaluations (22.2%) or outcome evaluations (22.2%). This review contributes to the limited literature on culturally responsive IPV interventions for Asian communities in the United States and highlights both promising practices and key gaps in the evidence base.
