Abstract:
AimThis study aimed to evaluate the relationship between eating disorders and premenstrual syndrome (PMS) in adolescents.MethodsA descriptive cross-sectional design was employed to recruit adolescents aged 17-19 years. Data were collected using the Premenstrual Syndrome Scale (PMSS), Eating Disorder Examination Scale (EDES), and Orthorexia-15 (ORTO-15).ResultsThe mean PMSS, ORTO-15, and EDES total scores were 118.39 ± 36.35, 37.91 ± 3.71, and 10.57 ± 7.82, respectively. Statistically significant correlations were observed between PMSS and both EDES and ORTO-15 scores (p < .05). The participants' ORTO-15 scores were below 40, indicating a risk of orthorexia nervosa.ConclusionThese findings suggest a link between PMS severity and eating disorder symptoms, including disordered eating patterns and orthorexic tendencies. PMS in adolescents is associated with eating disorder symptoms. Early assessment and intervention by mental health professionals may enhance awareness and support the effective management of PMS-related eating concerns.
