Abstract:
Artificial intelligence is rapidly becoming an integral resource for the surgical team, influencing clinical decision-making, coordination, and patient outcomes. This commentary explores how artificial intelligence could impact team dynamics in the operating room, challenge traditional roles and responsibilities, and impact surgical education. We argue that artificial intelligence's potential to improve safety, efficiency, equity, and outcomes depends on intentional integration, rigorous evaluation, and strategic adaptation of surgical culture and training. The future of surgical excellence and innovation may hinge not on whether algorithms displace humans but on how well humans and algorithms collaborate and complement one another as partners in patient care. Intentional integration, ongoing evaluation, and evolution of surgical training are essential to ensure that artificial intelligence enhances-rather than disrupts-surgical performance and innovation.
