Abstract:
This article provides a practical overview of fracture management in small animal patients, emphasizing comprehensive patient assessment, stabilization, imaging, fracture classification, and treatment decision-making. It highlights the importance of evaluating trauma patients for concurrent life-threatening injuries before addressing orthopedic problems. Key concepts include fracture biomechanics, bone healing, temporary stabilization techniques, pain management, and management of open fractures. The article reviews common repair methods, including plates, screws, intramedullary pins, interlocking nails, and external skeletal fixation, and discusses indications for referral to specialist surgeons. It also covers management of specific fracture types, postoperative care, rehabilitation, and potential complications.

Minor fractures with no bone displacement are treated by immobilizing the fractured bone using a cast or splint. However, in the case of fractures with displaced bones, the broken bones are repositioned before immobilization to ensure successful healing without deformation and loss of function. The realignment of fractured bone ends is performed through a process called reduction. If the procedure...
