Finding Community and Losing the Plot: Social Media, Healthcare, and Patient Experience

This commentary examines 12 first-person narratives of sharing health information on social media. Online storytelling simultaneously offers vital support and imposes concerning pressures. The authors describe how digital platforms mitigate isolation by fostering community, solidarity, and practical "community-driven knowledge," particularly around stigmatized conditions, disability, and reproductive health. Across many of the authors' narratives, we see that peer networks can supplement clinical care by providing expertise that shapes treatment decisions and offers support. At the same time, the authors detail social media's "dark side": genre-driven demands for sentimentality and simplification; judgments about "performing" illness correctly; the risks of posting, including qualifying for disability benefits or suffering professional consequences; and the loss of control as stories are misread, appropriated, or amplified for sensationalistic ends. Rather than framing patients as naïve or social media as riddled with misinformation, these narratives demonstrate that the authors are savvy communicators who courageously and strategically choose to share their experiences in pursuit of specific goals, including building community, seeking support, influencing policy, and educating others. Their reflections highlight both structural failures of healthcare that drive people online and the ethical, medical, and political insights generated there, pointing toward models of care that value lived experience and collaborations between formal medicine and patient-to-patient networks.
