Objective:
To develop an individualized anatomical plate for extreme distal clavicle fractures using 3D metal printing technology, and improve adaptability of internal fixation and accuracy of screw placement.
Methods:
A CT dataset of clavicle (with a layer thickness of 1 mm) from a 52-year-old healthy male volunteer was selected. The clavicle specimen model was reconstructed using Mimics 15.01, and an anatomical plate with wing-like structure for the extremely distal fracture of the clavicle was designed in NX 12.0. Import stl data into 3D printing machine to fabricate a 1∶1 anatomical plate for the distal end of clavicle and a clavicle model. Test the fit of the plate in vitro, evaluate accuracy of screw placement through X-ray and CT scans, and record the time and cost for model printing, screw path planning, plate fabrication, and cost.
Results:
The 3D-printed distal wing-shaped plate for clavicle had a good fit with the distal end of clavicle. All screws were located within the preset screw channels and did not penetrate shoulder-clavicle joint surface. The time for model printing, nail track planning, and steel plate fabrication was 125, 20, and 310 min respectively, and the total cost was approximately 3, 000 yuan.
Conclusion:
The 3D metal printing could provide an accurate fixation solution for fractures at the distal end of clavicle by customizing the personalized anatomical plate for the distal end of clavicle.
