Indigenous SIPin: Proof of Concept of a Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Reduction Intervention for Native American Men

Sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) (e.g., soda/pop, juices, sports drinks, energy drinks) is the largest single food source of calories in the United States, and intake is disproportionately high among Native American (NA) men. Yet SSB interventions for this population are not available.

We conducted a proof-of-concept study of an SSB intervention (Indigenous SIPin) in 30 NA men who play lacrosse. Co-developed with NA communities using participatory approaches and guided by an Indigenous-informed theoretical framework, the intervention included group classes, recap videos, and text messages.

Mixed methods were used to collect data at baseline and post intervention (6-month follow-up) to assess feasibility of recruitment, assessment, and intervention delivery; participant intervention satisfaction; and the intervention's impact on SSB intake.

Lessons learned included intervention expansion to engage sports teams other than lacrosse, recruiting pre-established teams, shortening intervention duration, and delivering fewer text messages.

Using participatory approaches to conduct a proof-of-concept study was an efficient strategy that we recommend to others who work with Indigenous populations.
