[Support needs of people with intellectual disabilities after hearing aid provision]

People with intellectual disabilities are frequently affected by hearing loss and often require additional support when using hearing aids.

A pilot study was conducted to determine the specific support needs of people with intellectual disabilities in a participatory process, in order to design a suitable support program to accompany hearing aid provision. The program's content and focus, which were still undefined at the start of the study, were finalized following an assessment of the target group's needs.

Problem-centered interviews in plain language were conducted with six participants with intellectual disabilities who had previously received hearing aids to elucidate their wishes and needs. These interviews were then evaluated using qualitative content analysis. In addition, a questionnaire including questions about requirements for a specific support program after hearing aid provision was completed by six employees of the respective residential facilities.

Extensive needs became apparent, particularly in relation to handling the devices. The assessments of the employees were mostly consistent with the statements of the participants, e.g., in relation to device handling.

There is a high need for support among people with intellectual disabilities after hearing aid fitting, especially with regard to independent use. A support program accompanying hearing aid provision must also target the affected person's significant others.
