Abstract:
Automation has become a cornerstone of modern clinical microbiology and virology laboratories, extending beyond operational efficiency. Diagnostic workflow design influences the precision, reproducibility, and reliability of laboratory results. This review examines laboratory automation as an integrated workflow framework that standardizes diagnostic processes and supports clinical decision-making through improved generation and application of diagnostic information. Drawing on classical microbiology, high-throughput molecular diagnostics, and pandemic-scale testing, it highlights how automation coordinates pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical processes. Automated systems enhance standardization, reduce inter-operator variability, and shorten turnaround times, improving scalability, consistency, and resilience during increased testing demands. However, automation introduces challenges, including algorithmic bias, calibration drift, software-related errors, and pre-analytical variability, requiring continuous expert oversight and quality assurance. Effective implementation therefore depends on integrating standardized workflows, robust quality systems, and expert interpretation to achieve reliable and clinically meaningful diagnostic outcomes.
