Abstract:
Retinal detachment (RD) associated with a macular hole (MH) in a previously vitrectomised eye represents one of the most challenging scenarios in vitreoretinal surgery. We report a case of an elderly patient in their late 80s who developed total RD with a concomitant MH following pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) for a dislocated capsular bag-intraocular lens complex. Management included the use of autologous retinal transplantation (ART). Complete retinal reattachment and closure of the MH were achieved. This case illustrates the importance of active posterior segment surveillance after complex vitreoretinal surgery and highlights ART as an effective rescue technique in this challenging setting.
