    Summary

    Vasectomy does not alter seminal prolactin levels in men. This study confirms prolactin is present in seminal vesicle and prostate secretions.

    Background:

    • Prolactin, a hormone, plays a role in various physiological processes.
    • Its presence and levels in seminal fluid are not fully understood.
    • Vasectomy is a common procedure affecting the male reproductive system.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effect of vasectomy on seminal prolactin levels.
    • To determine if prolactin is a significant component of seminal fluid.

    Main Methods:

    • Radioimmunoassay was used to measure prolactin concentrations in seminal fluid.
    • Seminal samples were collected from 11 healthy males 8-12 weeks post-vasectomy.
    • Results were compared to 34 age-matched males prior to vasectomy.

    Main Results:

    • Mean prolactin levels were similar between post-vasectomy (11.4 +/- 3.2 ng/ml) and pre-vasectomy (12.7 +/- 6.1 ng/ml) groups.
    • No statistically significant difference was observed between the two groups (P > 0.05).

    Conclusions:

    • Vasectomy does not appear to significantly alter seminal prolactin levels.
    • Prolactin is confirmed to be present in the secretions of the prostate and/or seminal vesicles.
