Abstract:
This letter responds to the recently published article, "Retrospective 10-year study on Filipino seafarer medical repatriations: comparing two time periods," and commends the authors for offering timely insights into the health and welfare of Filipino seafarers. Their work effectively highlights how the implementation of the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) 2006 contributed to a significant drop in repatriation cases-particularly those related to injuries and trauma. At the same time, the rise in musculoskeletal and mental health cases points to evolving challenges that deserve greater attention. This commentary also reflects on the importance of using repatriation rates responsibly, not as stand-alone performance metrics but as tools for improving health systems and onboard care. Ultimately, the letter supports ongoing research and policy efforts aimed at protecting the well-being of seafarers both in the Philippines and around the world.
