Abstract:
How is information encoded in the cerebral cortex, and how is it used? We review coding in sensory cortex, primarily in barrel cortex. Traditional single-cell analyses of barrel cortex have revealed features like somatotopy, tuning to angle of whisker deflection, and sensitivity to deflection velocity. A growing number of studies have, however, demonstrated mixed selectivity of individual neurons for sensory, movement, and task-related variables, re-emphasizing the need to consider population activity while investigating neural computation. Population representations may underpin an animal's ability to generalize behavior to novel stimuli and discriminate between stimuli in complex tasks. Additionally, neural 'subspaces' within high-dimensional population activity may facilitate distinct readouts by different downstream brain areas that have simple internal circuitry limiting their own computations. Population-level analyses are useful complements for understanding what primary sensory cortex encodes, how those codes are used, and how they are learned.

Motor and Sensory Areas of the Cortex
Motor Areas
The motor areas located in the frontal lobe are central to controlling voluntary movements. This region is further subdivided into the primary motor cortex and the premotor cortex.

Sensory Perception: Organization of the Somatosensory System
The receptor level:
The receptor level is the first stage of sensation. It involves the detection of a stimulus by specialized sensory receptors. The stimulus must arrive within the receptor's receptive field. Next, the receptor converts the energy of the stimulus...
Association Areas of the Cortex
Prefrontal Association Area: This area is located in the frontal lobe and is involved in planning, decision-making, and moderating social behavior. It connects with primary motor areas,...
Overview of Somatic Sensory Pathways
The somatosensory system is divided into three main pathways: the dorsal (or posterior) column-medial lemniscus, spinothalamic (or anterolateral), and spinocerebellar pathways.
The dorsal...
