Background And Aims:
Poor sleep can adversely affect well-being, cognitive function, and decision-making. Anaesthesiologists face unique occupational challenges (irregular shifts, on-call duties, and high stress), which exacerbate sleep disturbances. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of poor sleep among Indian anaesthesiologists and identify associated risk factors.
Methods:
A cross-sectional online survey was conducted among Indian anaesthesiologists. Sleep quality was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), while data on sleep duration, demographics, work patterns, personal habits, stress, and comorbidities were collected. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to identify factors independently associated with short sleep (<7 hours) and poor sleep quality (PSQI >5).
Results:
Out of 728 respondents, more than 60% reported short sleep (<7 hours) and more than 50% reported poor sleep quality (PSQI >5). Independent predictors of poor sleep included female gender, more than three night shifts or on-call duties per month, sedentary lifestyle, high home stress, and presence of self-reported sleep disorders. Respondents emphasised the impact of irregular hours, work-life imbalance, and the need for systematic interventions.
Conclusion:
Poor sleep quality is highly prevalent among Indian anaesthesiologists and is driven by both occupational and personal factors. Structured work schedules and shift patterns and emphasis on lifestyle and stress may improve sleep health and reduce patient risks.
