Abstract:
This study was intended to describe a novel sodium fluorescein (SF) extrusion technique using an excitation optic filter integrated into a three-dimensional (3D) visualization system to identify retinal breaks during retinal detachment (RD) surgery. Digitally assisted pars plana vitrectomy was performed with the NGENUITY 3D system in two RD patients. When retinal breaks were not identified, up to 0.1 mL of SF (0.1 mg/mL) was injected into the subretinal space via transscleral or transretinal approaches. Retinal breaks were identified by visualizing dye extrusion during perfluorocarbon injection with an excitation optical filter and a specific digital color channel. The technique revealed previously unidentified retinal breaks in both cases, enabling completion of standard RD repair. At 3 months, both patients achieved retinal reattachment, with no SF-related complications. This novel technique facilitated retinal break detection; however, further studies are needed to confirm long-term safety and efficacy.
