The Role of Religion and Spirituality in Clinical Practice: Considerations for Speech-Language Pathologists

1McLean County Unit District No. 5, Normal, IL.
Purpose:
The purpose of this article is to review the potential role of religion and spirituality in the practice of speech-language pathology and to identify possible clinical resources and directions for future research.
Method:
We reviewed the literature on health care providers' responses to the religious/spiritual practices of their patients, as well as existing tools for provider self-assessment in this domain.
Conclusions:
In a diverse and polarized country, it can be difficult for speech-language pathologists to address religious/spiritual practice with the patients and families they serve. These practices, however, may have significant implications for patients' needs and preferences in the domains of speech, language, and swallowing. Clinical tools for addressing these challenges appropriately can be viewed as a component of culturally responsive care.
