Abstract:
The interface between nephrology and geriatrics is becoming increasingly important. As the population ages, chronic kidney disease (CKD) in older adults is increasingly important. The physiological decline in renal function, combined with the high burden of comorbidities in older people, contributes substantially to the high prevalence of CKD in later life and to the increasing number of affected individuals. Reduced kidney function is closely associated with multimorbidity, polypharmacy, functional decline, cognitive impairment, and frailty. The specialties geriatrics and nephrology both focus on holistic, complex-care, in which multimorbidity management, individualized treatment planning, and the preservation of functional independence are central goals. Despite this conceptual overlap, an integrated nephrogeriatric perspective has not been adequately incorporated into research and clinical care.Against this background, the Nephrogeriatrics Research Network was established in 2024. As an open, interdisciplinary network, it promotes collaboration among researchers working at the intersection of nephrology and geriatrics, brings together clinical and methodological expertise, and-in close affiliation with DGG (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Geriatrie) and DGfN (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Nephrologie)-enhances the visibility of the field. The goals are to strengthen the evidence base for older, multimorbid individuals with CKD through multicenter, translational, research approaches and provide a central platform.
