Microcircuitry and oscillation features across model cortical regions

Abstract:
We developed biophysically realistic 10,000 cell neuronal network models of three cortical regions to investigate microcircuitry features that support beta and gamma oscillations that are thought to subserve communication in the brain. The model single cells and networks were constrained using in vitro and in vivo cellular and synaptic neurophysiology data. The models suggested the key microcircuit parameters based on their impact on oscillation characteristics across all regions, as follows: short-term presynaptic plasticity, electrical and chemical coupling between individual inhibitory interneurons types, the mutual inhibition strengths between LTS and FSI cell types, and the rate of the afferent drive.
