Elder abuse multidisciplinary teams: evolution, impact, and future directions
1California Elder Justice Coalition (Former Director), Los Angeles, California, USA.
Abstract:
This article traces the evolution of elder abuse multidisciplinary teams (MDTs), drawing on the author's experience developing one of the country's first teams and following their development to the present. It examines the roles of team members, the diverse perspectives they bring to case review, and the emergence of specialized teams in response to changing understandings and forms of abuse. These varied perspectives can enrich team discussions while also revealing differences in professional values and approaches. The article reviews research on MDT effectiveness and the challenges of measuring their often nuanced benefits for victims, team members, and the broader field of abuse prevention. It concludes with recommendations for helping MDTs respond to current challenges, including shifts in public policy and funding.
