Abstract:
Mastering tooth morphology is essential for first-year dental students, yet conventional teaching methods may not fully support spatial understanding of tooth anatomical structures. To provide students with an additional visual and tactile learning resource, we incorporated enlarged 3D-printed tooth models into a dental anatomy course at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry. Students used the models to identify key anatomical landmarks before transitioning to waxing activities and subsequently provided feedback on their experience. Students generally found the enlarged models helpful for recognizing anatomical structures and building confidence with tooth morphology. However, some students still struggled to identify specific landmarks and highlighted the importance of timely instructor feedback. The experience suggests that enlarged 3D-printed models can supplement traditional dental anatomy instruction, particularly when combined with structured guidance and faculty feedback.
