Abstract:
Incretin drugs have been used for more than 20 years but have continually evolved over that time, with use exploding over the last several years. The future seems to hold promise beyond diabetes and obesity, with incretins being studied for everything from osteoarthritis to substance use disorder. While there is no doubt a benefit will be seen from advancing the science of incretin use, the ever-present moral hazard of pharmaceutical manufacturers must be kept in check through responsible research and prescribing of independent researchers and clinicians. The need for better evidence guiding incretin use and better-informed clinicians to apply that evidence is why we designed the special issue Incretins in Action: Unlocking New Frontiers from Bench to Bedside as a primer for the interested researcher or clinician. We hope readers will learn from and share this special issue as they advance the care of metabolic diseases around the world.
