Abstract:
The first systematic high-pressure IR study reveals that anomalous hydrogen-bond strengthening and suppression of NH4+ reorientations stabilize NH4ClO4, a dominant oxidizer in solid propellants, above 1 GPa. At 4.8 GPa, perchlorate reorientations drive the second transition, which is completed at 10 GPa. These findings resolve persistent ambiguities in the structural evolution of NH4ClO4 to advance the understanding of its phase diagram and thermodynamics.
