Listeriosis in the elderly: epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical presentation, and prevention
Abstract:
This paper provides a comprehensive analysis of the current epidemiological situation of invasive listeriosis among individuals aged 65 years and older in the Czech Republic and across EU member states, alongside an examination of key aspects of its pathogenesis, clinical manifestations, longterm health outcomes, laboratory diagnosis, and prevention strategies. Particular attention is devoted to the role of wholegenome sequencing (WGS) in surveillance, the early detection of epidemic clusters, and the challenges posed by persistent Listeria monocytogenes strains in foodprocessing environments and ready-to-eat (RTE) food products. Effective prevention of listeriosis relies primarily on robust foodsafety measures, targeted risk communication, and the timely identification of invasive forms of the disease.
