Objective:
We examined the relationship between grass pollen dispersal and nasal and ocular symptoms and medication use of patients with grass pollen allergy.
Methods:
The severity of nasal and ocular symptoms and medication usage frequency in the subjects with pollinosis symptoms from May to June were investigated by 16 cooperative medical institutions from May 1 to August 31, 2024. We calculated the weekly average total symptom and medication scores from the survey results and examined the relationship between these scores in each region and grass pollen counts collected at 13 cooperative pollen monitoring sites during the same period.
Results:
No clear correlation was observed between the weekly average grass pollen counts at each site and the weekly average total symptom and medication scores in each region. Under specific conditions, fluctuations in scores suggestive of worsening hay fever symptoms were observed from mid-May to June.
Conclusion:
From the results of the pollen survey and the symptom and medication survey, there were subjects with worsening symptoms during the grass pollen dispersal period. The timing of taking medication for worsening grass pollinosis symptoms might be June in Hokkaido and mid-May to June in other regions.
