Abstract:
A 70-year-old woman was referred to our hospital with symptoms of fever. Computed tomography scan revealed left hydronephrosis and deviation of the left ureter into the sciatic foramen. She was therefore diagnosed with a left ureteral sciatic hernia and urinary upper tract obstructive pyelonephritis. Percutaneous nephrostomy was placed after failed trial of transurethral insertion of ureteral stent. After four days, antegrade placement of a double pig-tail stent had succeeded. At a later date, laparoscopic closure of the sciatic foramen without mesh was performed. The ureteral sciatic hernia has not recurred at 29 months postoperatively. Although ureteral sciatic hernia is a very rare disorder, laparoscopic closure of the sciatic foramen without mesh may be a safe and effective surgical option.
