Abstract:
18F-Fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tompgraphy/computed tomography (18F-FDG PET/CT) has emerged as a valuable whole-body metabolic imaging modality in sepsis and related systemic infectious disorders. Exploiting increased glucose metabolism in activated inflammatory cells, it facilitates localization of occult infective foci, detection of septic embolization, and guidance of source control when conventional investigations are inconclusive. Evidence demonstrates high diagnostic yield and meaningful impact on clinical management, particularly in sepsis of unknown origin and high-risk bacteraemia. However, diagnostic accuracy depends on appropriate patient preparation and timing. This review summarizes current evidence, practical challenges, emerging applications, and future research priorities for integrating 18F-FDG PET/CT into sepsis care.
