Introduction:
As climate change intensifies extreme heat, lived experiences of hazardous conditions are increasingly documented in large online communities, which form global spaces where people discuss, experiment, and crowd-source strategies for responding to heat-related challenges.
Methods:
We analyzed the most popular posts from r/heat_prep, a rapidly growing Reddit community of over 10,000 members focused on heat preparedness, and administered a survey of its community members.
Results:
Engagement peaked during the Northern Hemisphere warm season, with posts centered on practical advice, personal experiences, and improvised cooling strategies. Most survey respondents reported frequent heat discomfort alongside physical and mental health effects, and preferred Reddit as a source of heat-related information over traditional channels. Community discussions highlighted low-cost adaptations, peer-driven innovation, and emotional support through humor and collective sense-making.
Conclusions:
These findings suggest that online communities can complement formal heat-health communication by surfacing lived experiences, unmet needs, and practical adaptation strategies often absent from official guidance.
