Abstract:
We introduce naphthol-cholesteryl dimers showing that constitutional isomerism in a rigid core dictates mesophase structure and thermal stability. Planar naphthalene-diol cores linked to a chiral cholesteryl segment via flexible spacers permit subtle substitution changes that switch packing from V-shaped branches to linear rods, sharply altering the mesophase type and transition temperatures. Linear para-isomers promote tight π-π stacking, elevating average clearing temperatures (TC) above 177 °C and broadening the nematic phase range. In contrast, V-shaped variants lower TC to an average of 135 °C. XRD shows intercalated SmA layers, and UV-vis reveals concentration-dependent H-aggregation in the 2,6-series. Both dimers exhibit monomer/excimer fluorescence; 2,6-NCh-Dn shows enhanced solid-state emission and larger Stokes shifts-a difference that highlights aromatic geometry as a key template when designing mesogens.

Stereoisomerism
Isomers are different chemical species that have the same chemical formula.
Transition metal complexes often exist as geometric isomers, in which the same atoms are connected through the same types of bonds but with differences in their orientation in space. Coordination complexes with two different ligands in the cis and trans positions from a ligand of interest form isomers. For example, the octahedral [Co(NH3)4Cl2]+ ion has two isomers (Figure 1) In the cis...

Isomerism in Alkenes
An isomer is called cis-2-butene when the methyl groups are on the same side of the double bond, and the other stereoisomer, in which methyl groups are on the opposite side of the double bond, is called trans-2-butene. The cis and trans stereoisomers are not...
Constitutional Isomers of Alkanes
The linear isomer of an alkane is prefixed by the term “n”; hence a linear isomer of pentane is known as n-pentane. Based on the type of branching, some of the branched isomers are given...
Disubstituted Cyclohexanes: cis-trans Isomerism
In cyclohexane, the substituents can occupy different positions generating distinct isomers.
