Nucleic Acid Therapeutics in an Age of Artificial Intelligence

Abstract:
Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming how scientific hypotheses are formulated, tested, and applied. Nucleic acid therapeutics can benefit from emerging opportunities but will also face new challenges. AI lowers the barrier to hypothesis generation, increasing the emphasis on critical evaluation, rigorous experimental testing, and expert judgement. The goal of this perspective is to begin that discussion, with an emphasis on basic and applied research at the interface of nucleic acid science and medicine.

siRNA - Small Interfering RNAs
In the cytoplasm, siRNA is processed from a double-stranded RNA, which comes from either endogenous DNA transcription or exogenous sources like a virus. This double-stranded RNA is then cleaved by the ATP-dependent...

RNA Interference
This process occurs naturally in cells, often through the activity of genomically-encoded microRNAs. Researchers can take advantage of this mechanism by introducing synthetic RNAs to deactivate specific genes for research or therapeutic purposes. For example, RNAi could be used...
