Abstract:
A necropsy of a female maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus) from northern Argentina revealed a gunshot wound with embedded metallic fragments, severe emaciation, and renal damage from Dioctophyme renale. The case illustrates how illegal persecution continues to endanger this species, categorized as Vulnerable in Argentina and Near Threatened globally. Beyond the individual loss, such events expose persistent human-wildlife conflict and the urgent need for a coordinated national conservation plan that explicitly addresses direct violence, enforces legal protection, and promotes community engagement to safeguard the species' long-term survival.
