The trifecta of Plasmodium falciparum chromatin: open, closed, and centric

Abstract:
Ramón-Zamorano et al. provide the first comprehensive characterization of protein complexes associated with heterochromatin, euchromatin, and centromeric chromatin in the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum. The study uncovers novel proteins involved in chromatin remodeling, sexual commitment, RNA-mediated regulation, and chromosome segregation, providing new insights into the chromatin-based mechanisms governing parasite development.

The chromatin
In combination with specialized DNA binding protein called Histones, the DNA double helix forms a compact DNA: protein complex called chromatin. The chromatin itself is further compacted into higher-order structures.
