Generative artificial intelligence in jazz improvisation: an Actor-Network Theory perspective
1Popular Music Studies, Department of Musicology, Shanghai Conservatory of Music, Shanghai, China.
Abstract:
Generative artificial intelligence (GAI) plays an increasingly significant role in the artistic creation process. In the domain of highly interactive human-machine composition, GAI is no longer a passive tool but exhibits a certain degree of agency. Based on Actor-Network Theory (ANT), a social science theoretical framework proposed by French sociologist Bruno Latour and other scholars, GAI can be viewed as a non-human subject endowed with the status of an actor. In jazz improvisation, a representative creative activity, the agency of GAI is manifested in the generation of its specific musical works, presenting a contrast to human creation. Furthermore, this process reveals the leading and constraining factors in the actions of GAI, as well as the potential pathways and mutual interactions of its future co-creative development with humans.
