Abstract:
Applying the River Continuum Concept to riparian zones, this study examined how longitudinal gradients in five southwestern German streams affect spider communities. While alpha diversity remained stable, spider abundance increased downstream, and community and trait compositions shifted significantly along the watercourse. These findings highlight how natural longitudinal variations structure riparian ecosystems, offering a crucial baseline for assessing human impacts on biodiversity.
