Abstract:
Polymeric materials have become increasingly important in transportation and aerospace due to their low weight, processability, and ability to provide tailored functional properties. This study examines the patent landscape of polymeric materials used in these sectors through a combined keyword and International Patent Classification (IPC) search strategy. The results show that the United States accounts for the largest share among national patent offices, while the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) represents the major international filing route. The leading IPC categories include B29C, C08L, C08K, C08F, C08J, B32B, C09D, and C08G. Recent patent activity is concentrated on lightweight structures, protective and flame-resistant coatings, thermal management, bio-based resins, fiber-reinforced composites, graphene-based materials, and high-temperature polymers. Overall, the findings indicate that current development is increasingly directed toward durable, sustainable, thermally functional, and multifunctional polymer systems for advanced transportation and aerospace applications.
