Understanding in conditions of neutrality: a closer look at its objects

Abstract:
In her article titled 'A portrait of understanding as a non-factive state', Sjölin Wirling provides an engaging 'portrait' of a type of understanding-termed 'non-factive objectual understanding'-that inquirers who have yet to settle certain questions concerning a target phenomenon can achieve under particular conditions. This paper investigates whether, in the situations Sjölin Wirling discusses, the relevant epistemic improvements really are improvements in our understanding of phenomena.

Conditions of Equilibrium
Equilibrium refers to a state where a rigid body is not subjected to any translational or rotational motion. This state is achieved when the force and couple acting on a rigid body equal zero. When the system of external forces results in a net effect equivalent to zero, the rigid body is considered to be in equilibrium.
Internal forces are not considered for conditions of equilibrium because they occur in equal and opposite pairs within the body, effectively canceling each other. As a result,...

Gestalt Principles of Perception
Gestalt principles provide a framework for understanding how humans perceive objects as unified wholes within their context. These principles are essential in explaining the cognitive processes that make sense of complex visual stimuli by organizing them into coherent groups. One fundamental principle is proximity, which posits that objects located close to each other are perceived as a collective group. For instance, when dots are positioned near one another, the visual system interprets them...
Naturalistic Observations
If you want to understand how behavior occurs, one of the best ways to gain information is to simply observe the behavior in its natural context. However, people might change their behavior in unexpected ways if they know they are being observed. How do researchers obtain accurate information when people tend to hide their natural behavior? As an example, imagine that your professor asks everyone in your class to raise their hand if they always wash their hands after using the restroom. Chances...
The Nativist Approach
The nativist approach to infant cognitive development proposes that infants are born with inherent knowledge structures that allow them to interpret the world almost immediately. This perspective contrasts with earlier developmental theories, such as those proposed by Jean Piaget, which emphasized a more gradual acquisition of cognitive abilities through interaction with the environment. One key concept in this approach is object permanence — the understanding that objects continue to exist...
Preoperational Thought II: Object Space and Causality
Jean Piaget’s preoperational stage, spanning ages 2 to 7, is marked by symbolic thought and the development of spatial and causal reasoning. Although Piaget emphasized the limitations of children’s logic, later research suggests that preschoolers may reason more effectively than he initially proposed.Developing Spatial UnderstandingAround age 3, children begin understanding that two-dimensional images and models can represent real spaces. This allows them to interpret pictures, maps, and scale...
Structuralism
Structuralism, an early psychological theory developed by Wilhelm Wundt and his student Edward Bradford Titchener, sought to dissect the human mind into its most fundamental components. Wundt's groundbreaking work in his laboratory set the stage for Titchener to define structuralism's goal as cataloging the "atoms" of the mind—sensations, images, and feelings—akin to how chemists identify elements of matter.
