Abstract:
Polarizers are critical components of integrated optical gyroscope chips. However, it remains a significant challenge to achieve integrated polarizers with a high polarization extinction ratio (PER). We propose and demonstrate integrated transverse-electric fundamental-mode-pass polarizers with high PER for O-band and C-band interferometric fiber optic gyroscopes on a commercial silicon nitride photonics platform. Using cascaded asymmetric directional coupler structures, we achieve a PER exceeding 45 dB with an insertion loss below 0.8 dB over 1260-1325 nm, together with a PER exceeding 30 dB over 1500-1535 nm. This polarizer is promising for future integration into optical gyroscope chips through monolithic or heterogeneous photonic integration.
