Issue:
Young people in Australia experience substantial barriers to sexual and reproductive health (SRH) information and services, contributing to high rates of sexually transmissible infections (STIs). Caddyshack Project, developed by the HIV and Related Programs (HARP) Unit in the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District (ISLHD), is a multi-component health promotion programme that combines digital and traditional outreach to enhance knowledge and accessibility of SRH resources.
Methods:
This mixed-methods evaluation included an online survey with parents, end-users and multiplicators, focus groups with young people aged 18-24 and social media analytics across Facebook and Instagram.
Results:
Sixty-nine people responded to the survey, the majority being multiplicators such as teachers and health workers. Awareness of programme components varied, with newsletters and webinars most commonly known, while the highest usage was for ordering sexual health products. Satisfaction was consistently high, particularly, for educational materials and practical resources. Focus group participants valued bold designs and practical items but expressed concerns about inclusivity and branding. Social media analysis indicated Instagram reached a broader audience, whereas Facebook resonated more with professionals and parents.
Conclusions:
Caddyshack was perceived as trusted and relevant by participants that combine community credibility with digital innovation. However, improvements are needed in outreach, inclusivity and branding to maximise impact.
What This Study Adds:
These findings highlight the importance of co-designed, multi-platform health promotion strategies that balance professional credibility with youth-focused engagement in order to address ongoing inequities in SRH access.
