Abstract:
The devices and techniques used in mechanical thrombectomy have reached a high level of maturity. Over the next decade, the focus will shift from an era of developing treatments and technologies, to one of delivering treatments in a sustainable manner. Key challenges include workforce development, the establishment of healthcare systems to reduce regional disparities in access to care, reimbursement reform and healthcare economics, and physician work-style reform through task shifting and task sharing to allied healthcare professionals. As these issues are closely interconnected, comprehensive policy and system reforms that address them in an integrated manner are urgently required.
