Abstract:
Global warming leads to increased average atmospheric temperatures, which will inevitably have an impact on plant growth and crop yields. It is essential to understand how plant nutrition will be affected by elevated temperatures. Nitrogen is one of the major mineral nutrients, and its uptake is enhanced during the light period, peaking at the day/night transition, whereas its storage, especially in the form of nitrate (NO3-), is favoured in the dark. Given the overlap between light and temperature responses, we review the interaction between nitrogen nutrition and light responses and place this in the context of new findings on temperature sensing. We also suggest new hypotheses on the potential links between temperature and NO3- homeostasis.
