Abstract:
A method for the palladium(II)-catalyzed highly regioselective hydroacyloxylation of unactivated alkenes with carboxylic acids is described using a picolinamide directing group via a Wacker-type nucleopalladation pathway. This novel strategy paves the way for generating very useful β-amino alcohols and esters from simple starting materials, which are important building blocks in many natural products and biologically active compounds. The transformation affords the desired products in good yields and exhibits broad compatibility with aromatic, aliphatic, and fatty carboxylic acids. In addition to forming valuable C-O bonds, the reaction generates a new stereogenic center, providing a synthetically valuable platform for further functionalization and diversification.

Reduction of Alkenes: Asymmetric Catalytic Hydrogenation
The metal catalyst used can be either heterogeneous or homogeneous. When hydrogenation of an alkene generates a chiral center, a pair of enantiomeric products is expected to form. However, an enantiomeric excess of one of the products can be facilitated using an enantioselective reaction or an...
Reduction of Alkynes to cis-Alkenes: Catalytic Hydrogenation
Like alkenes, alkynes can be reduced to alkanes in the presence of transition metal catalysts such as Pt, Pd, or Ni. The reaction involves two sequential syn additions of hydrogen via a cis-alkene intermediate.
Preparation of Diols and Pinacol Rearrangement
The reaction begins with transferring a proton from the acid catalyst to one of the hydroxyl groups, producing an oxonium ion.
Reduction of Alkenes: Catalytic Hydrogenation
Metals like palladium, platinum, and nickel are commonly used in their solid forms — fine powder on an inert surface. As these catalysts remain insoluble in the reaction mixture, they are referred to as heterogeneous catalysts.
